It is said that the finest sculptors have the ability to reveal what’s already contained within the stone’s natural form. When Ian mined this 3.5 tonne pounamu boulder from a rockpool in Big Bay Fiordland, New Zealand, he could already visualise the reptilian qualities in the stone’s form. Beneath the stone, shells and crustaceans have grown and lived upon it when it was once at home in the seas of Awarua Point. In Maori mythology, Taniwha are beings that live in deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in the sea. Poutini is the name of the taniwha swimming up and down the West Coast of the South Island protecting both the people and the spiritual essence or mauri of pounamu, greenstone. Rising from the pool like a mighty Taniwha, the boulder was destined to be sculpted by Ian’s skillful hands to become this final stunning form.
